When I began reading In the Night Garden, its plot structure boggled my mind, conjuring an image of a painting which includes a painting of itself within, which of course would have another duplicated painting within that. Probably the novel’s clearest statement of the ambivalence of social connection comes late in the novel when Case reflects on his involvement with unseen ‘bosses’. I'm with you there, these models always end up taking twice as long to complete.

Le Guin argues that these criteria may be successfully applied to works of science fiction and so answers in the affirmative her rhetorical question posed at the beginning of her essay: "Can a science fiction writer write a novel?" We agree with the debunking, wholeheartedly. The rule of thumb is that texts about what can be realized are science fiction and those about what cannot be realized are fantasy. But for those willing to pull weight, it's no big deal.
