The Arts and Crafts movement had maintained a hierarchy between the (male) artist, architect, designer and the (female) embroiderer, but Art Needlework had boosted the status of embroidery and allowed women to see the commercial value of their work and also its value as ‘art’ and women began to question why they should not design their own work.
