The Centre for Environmental Geochemistry combines the University of Nottingham's and the British Geological Survey's strengths, focussing on the use of geochemistry in research, training and teaching around reconstructing past environmental and climate change, biogeochemical cycling including pollution typing/provenance, science based archaeology, and the use of geochemical tools for research into the subsurface. Winkelmann’s group is investigating the details of light-initiated reactions on the surface of nanosized titanium dioxide particles. The later (overall) reaction is responsible for rusting. Geochemistry is the scientific study of the chemical composition of the Earth. Concentrations are somewhat greater in the Interior Plains and the Rocky Mountain System. This process is particularly important in closed hydrologic basins of the semiarid western United States where evaporation rates exceed precipitation. The National Science Foundation recently awarded a 3-year $300k grant to Prof. The solubility product can be used to predict whether a precipitate will form when two solutions are mixed. In 1897 Eduard Buchner, at the time professor in Tübingen, published results demonstrating that the fermentation of sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide can take place in the absence of yeast cells.
