New Yorker 69:26 (Aug 16, 1993): 24. What made cyberpunk “punk” was the process of stripping encrusted genre conventions away, going back to the roots, tapping into the raw energy of the genre in its purest forms, and then trying in the process to create new kinds of emotional experiences — the kind of body horror, say, we associate with cyberpunk’s darkest currents. Land & Identity: Theory, Memory, and Practice. It was a complete coincidence that I chose that book first. Glenn Branca was also the originator of the short-lived annual Rominauld Tangin Award (from Sterling) for cyberpunk fiction.

Unfortunately, mirrorshades make an ’80s fashion statement that also reminds us that much of the tech in early cyberpunk has gone out of date and that some of the extrapolation has proved wrong. Near-future science fiction takes place in the present day or in the next few decades. What threat does Wintermute claim to want to protect humanity from? Others imagine the discovery of scientific principles currently unimagined. Harding was amongst the most prolific of all the contributors to Weird Tales, having had 36 stories published in its pages.

So I ask you, as hopefully you're a cyberpunk fan, what are the most influential works (music, book, computer game or movie) that you think do the best job of distilling the essence of cyberpunk and more importantly, how should I go about incorporating their essence into my game? A good rule of thumb here is that if most people believe something—then it’s wrong. Bruce Sterling was the spokesman of the movement, writing Schismatrix (1985) and Islands in the Net (1988) and editing the influential Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology (1986).

At the time of this writing, Mad Max: Fury Road is nominated for ten Academy Awards. Which is why we’ve come up with this mixed list of women who write sci-fi from multiple styles: hard science fiction, steampunk romance, speculative fiction and post-apocalyptic sci-fi, to name a few. That’s what it really is today—there are vicious thieves and artificial intelligence sharks and everything else out there, swimming in it, but we’re still talking to our mothers and exchanging blueberry-pie recipes and looking at porn and tweeting all the stuff we’re doing.

What does Jameson mean by “representational apparatus”? We tried to cram in as much material as we could, covering everthing from high-brow crit theory to sci-fi lit and films to the wired worlds of hackers/crackers and the zine publishing scene which was starting to move into cyberspace. This story led to comic strips featuring Buck Rogers (1929), Brick Bradford (1933), and Flash Gordon (1934). It impresses us with ingenuity; it thrills us with possibilities." "The imaginative element is essential for me," says Gordon Van Gelder, Editor and Publisher of Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine.

The creators had previously made another notable cyberpunk series, Serial Experiments Lain, which focused on one girl's exploration of "The Wired". The out-of-control robot can be read as a criticism of the efficiency-oriented theories of Frederick Winslow Taylor and the practices of industrialist Henry Ford. When Hilda, a beautiful young member of England’s cynical postwar generation, meets Michael, a hapless mutant capable of perceiving the molecular composition of objects and the ever-shifting patterns of electromagnetic fields, she becomes his apostle.

Speaking of rising rents the margin at 3. The way in which a story is told is as important as the idea. The idea of humans who create a god or computers that develop godlike powers is raised in Frederic Brown's "Answer" (1954), Isaac Asimov's "The Last Question" (1956), and Martin Caidin's The God Machine (1989). In Neal Stephenson's 1992 Snow Crash a computer-dependent world is turned chaotic by a computer virus named "Snow Crash," and the hero turns for help at one point to the "Librarian."

The Back to the Future series and The Time Machine goes one step further and explores the result of altering the past, while in Star Trek: First Contact (1996) and Star Trek (2009) the crew must rescue the Earth from having its past altered by time-travelling cyborgs and alien races. I would put it simply as "science and technology seem real and are 'characters' in the story". Interestingly, the latest entry in the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, uses this for its setting, with the highly advanced technology being contrasted with the poor conditions of the populace, and a giant Mega Corp. that has grown to rival the power of sovereign nations.
