In 1998, writer and critic Lawrence Person published “Notes Toward a Postcyberpunk Manifesto.” It begins: Bud, from Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age, is a classic cyberpunk protagonist. In the DIY punk tradition, I self-published my Collected Essays as an ebook in 2012, and in the fuck-it hacker tradition, I also made the essays available for free.

Apocalyptic fiction is concerned with the end of civilization through war ( On the Beach ), pandemic ( The Last Man ), astronomic impact ( When Worlds Collide ), ecological disaster ( The Wind from Nowhere ), or some other general disaster or with a world or civilization after such a disaster. The ideas explored in subgenres like cyberpunk are ostensibly unsympathetic to a traditionalist critique of society. If the work dates from The '80s, there's a good chance that there will be a theme of East Asian economic dominance, with the evil corporations being sinister zaibatsu (possibly masterminded behind the scenes by yakuza ) and Asian-sounding brand-names liberally scattered around. One out of a thousand can be a hero and say, "I only listen to the Muse."
